I can delay no further -- it's time for The Shuttered Room! Of the many Kirchin scores yet to receive a proper release, this is probably my favorite. It's high time I dug out my crappy bootleg DVDr and confirm it's as good as my memory of it. Kirchin's homespun baroque jazz is really the center of gravity of the whole thing. Rumor has it that Jonny Trunk printed up some vinyl copies of this, but that it won't likely be released. Would love to get my hands on a copy. In the meantime, this rudimentary rip will have to do.
Yeah its a classic , managed to grab a poor bootleg rip of this sometime back and looking forward to listening to yours, thank you
ReplyDeleteWhile I'm here did you ever get that rip of The Freakmaker OST from 1974, its based around a loot if the stuff from world within worlds but not a bad listen
ReplyDeleteWOW!! Thanks:)))

Reza,
ReplyDeleteI've heard one version of Freakmaker. Is this the same film as Mutations?
Followed the Flickr link... any chance you can share Soul of Bobby?
Wonderful. You surely run the best blog on the internet!
ReplyDeleteGlad you like it. Thanks for all the feedback, everybody.
ReplyDeleteAnother great rip! I only found the blog about a week ago, but it's really resonating with me: here's to many more posts!
ReplyDelete'The Shuttered Room' - quite a while since I last saw it. The HPL/Derleth connection is nominal, but there's a disjointed feel throughout which is quite appealing. Not bad for a first-time director (who went on to direct 'I Start Counting' and 'The Strange Affair', both with Kirchin soundtracks)...
A bit of pointless trivia: I was in a group (Napalm Death) back in the 1980's: on our second demo (in 1982), we recorded a "freeform" jam called 'The Room with the Shuttered Window' which was partly inspired by this film...
Yes, 'Freakmaker' is an alternate title for 'The Mutations' (Jack Cardiff's swansong)...
Hi for what its worth a had Freakmaker already in my upload folder if anyone would like a listen, not my orig rip

Thanks! This is great. I had heard it before but filed it away and forgotten about it. There are some really really beautiful moments here.
ReplyDeleteDear Toys and Techniques, Basil gifted me with a recording of his SHUTTERED ROOM score before he passed away, and it is a masterpiece. What an under-appreciated Master he was. - John Bender

ReplyDeleteIs there a rip of the "Shuttered" soundtrack here somewhere?
It's something of a holy grail for me...it (along with Soft Machine's "Third") influenced the 12-year old me to get into jazz (as both a listener and musician), when my contemporaries were convinced that Slade were the future.
