Circle of Light
It's hard to keep track of Delia Derbyshire's post-workshop output in the early 1970s, but one thing I wanted to make sure to mention is her collaboration with Elsa Stansfield on the music for Anthony Roland's 1972 film "Circle of Light: The Photography of Pamela Bone." The film itself is straight out of Ghost Box central casting, a beautiful wordless video essay that pans in and out of desolate figure-less landscape photos, most of them bearing the imprint of huge sun-like spherical objects. Very "Winter Sun Wavelengths." The score weaves electronic effects and field recordings (birds chirping, wind howling through branches, etc.) into a kind of pixie-dust sprinkled ambient sound tapestry. Here's a link to the soundtrack. It runs about a half hour or so. And you can stream a clip from the film here (or if that doesn't work, here).
Once again, totally amazing post! I'd love to see the whole film!
ReplyDeleteThanks for this illuminating post. Though I've never been convinced by anything from the BBC Workshop, I must admit being really impressed by this fascinating sonic artifact in which I find strange echoes with one of my recent posts, the Knud Viktor LP, also from 1972. Either nature itself was altogether different back in '72, or the composers were different animals.
ReplyDeleteCool, I haven't listened to that one yet -- too much great stuff on your blog!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing this rarity.
ReplyDeleteI'm stunned, delighted, and pleasantly bewitched.
please please reupload the soundtrack!
