Out of the Blue

Watched this the other night. Dennis Hopper film from 1980 -- kind of similar to Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains! Linda Manz is the kid who does the haunting narration in Days of Heaven.

  1. Ben, really pleased to see this here. I saw it last month and wasn't sure what to make of it. Hopper attempting to crawl out of his acid-fried 70s wilderness with some worthy social commentary but clearly still under pharmaceutical influences?
I guess I'd place it in the intriguing sub-category of 70s/80s US alt-teen cinema, alongside others such as 'Over the Edge', 'Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore','Suburbia', 'My Bodyguard', probably culminating in 'Rumblefish'(though that's considerably more mainstream!)

  2. Ha, that's a great way of describing what Hopper is doing. Over the Edge scared the shit out of me as a kid. Classic moral panic film. I don't think I've seen Alice... Will have to track it down. I think my favorite in this genre, though a little later in the game, is River's Edge.
