Dorker Vibes

Totally amazing music for 'liter' and 'dorker' party people. This album is so good.

The films of James Scott

Do you know the films of James Scott? My friend Jess Pires recently organized a program of his short films at the ICA in Philadelphia. I hadn't heard of Scott but now I'm hooked. Scott made a number of "artist" films in the 60s before leaving Britain for Los Angeles, including ones on David Hockney, Claes Oldenberg, R.B. Kitaj, and Richard Hamilton. The Hamilton film is my fave -- check it out here at The Space. There's also a good one (I think not made by Scott) about Bridget Riley.

The Laceys

Loving this DVD of Bruce Lacey's films. I found a book by the amazing David Alan Mellor that shows some of the original posters for the Laceys' shows and happenings. Seems clear Lacey's wife, Jill Bruce, played a huge role in the best of these. To me the robotics stuff is less interesting than their experiments with living rooms and their rural turn in the 70s. Mellor describes the Lacey's real-time domestic installations as echoing TV shows like The Stone Tape in their concern with the memories embedded in walls.

Mellor also describes the Laceys' life-changing visit to Silbury Hill, and their growing fascination in ley lines, dowsing, pagan rituals, geomancy and the like. Running around the fields wearing robes, etc. Their huge body-shaped PVC inflatables also sound amazing -- I think once you went in through the mouth and arrived at the stomach you would be greeted with a psychedelic light show! Total craziness from Britain's weirdo knight-errant.

The Erotic Rites of Frankenstein

Watching: Jesús Franco's The Erotic Rites of Frankenstein. As the beautiful half-bird blind seer says at the beginning of the movie, "I foresee pleasure and death and blood..." Great review over at Strange Attractor. And if I did this right you should be able to watch it too by downloading here.

//REUPS//

New links for old mixtapes. For a music blog that never posts music, there are more of these than I thought! "Protecting Nature's Estate" is probably my favorite and a good place to start. Lemme know if you need tracklists or anything. Was just listening to "Wallpaper," which got buried in a comments page and is good if you like new music.

Summerhill USA

Richard Bull, Summerhill USA (Penguin, 1970).

"I think the whole business about free schools having to be full of love is just nonsense. It should be full of regard for each other. But it just can't be all loving because human beings have all kinds of feelings, including love. We try to have an environment where hostility is an acceptable emotion. We try to have things available and everywhere handy for expressing hostility safely. Tearing newspapers and kicking and squashing boxes, egg cartons or eggshells, things to throw and things to hit, all the time handy." -- Phillis Fleishman

Donika Venkova

Found some cool Bulgarian records. I love the flag-like bright colors and type, and the glasses are just too good. In the first record somebody fires up a drum machine for a while. The second record (Emil Something-or-other) is not very good -- I was fooled by the lipstick and liner notes mentioning moog and melotron. But it's still fun to listen to if you imagine the singer is an off-duty vampire who only wants to sing.
