The Scenic Route

Mark Rappaport's The Scenic Route (1978) on torrent. Interesting -- almost like a cross between a painting and a nineteenth-century novel. Cool deadpan stilted dialogue, Hal Hartley style, a love triangle, ornate wallpaper, lots of frame-within-a-frame visual tricks, and an amazing dance scene. Mustaches wild!

  1. Wow, these still look amazing - colors, textures, composition, fashion! And very 1978 the whole thing.

  3. I wanted to write "stills" instead of "still" - both true though. I'll watch the movie!

  6. Watched it and liked it - thanks again for the tipp!
Really interesting combination of being narrative and formally unconventional. Tableaux vivants galore...
I also love the way sound/dialogue is treated, when you see people talk but hear the voiceover.
I also thought of Will Oldham, haha.

  8. It was a lot of fun! I might post at least my set.
Not enough purple in general and Will Oldham lookalikes in three piece suits in the crowd though.
