Mix by James

Ladies and gents, I have a very special treat for you today, a mix made by the one and only James of Broadcast! I nearly flipped out when he sent me this over the winter, and now I'm very happy to be able to share it with you too. James has been working on the soundtrack for Peter Strickland's film Berberian Sound Studio, now making the festival circuit and out in theaters August 31st. I haven't seen the film yet but it looks and sounds amazing (congrats Peter!). James says the OST is nearly finished and should be appearing soon... Until then enjoy his sublime sunwarped selections, available here.

Making Music Your Own

Silver Burdett, Making Music Your Own educational LP, 1968. Got this in a clothes/records swap with friends six or seven years ago and listened to it for the first time yesterday. Love this zippy percussion doodle with whooshing noises for 7th graders. The Silver Burdett slogan: "Records that teach."

The Expulsion of the Devil

The Expulsion of the Devil (1973). Cool French poltergeists. A young Gerard Depardieu as proto-Ghost Hunters researcher... wow.

Great digital archive on weaving here. These images are from The Minnesota Weaver and Drafts and Designs.

These films by Walter Ungerer are just stunning. Must find out more about this longtime VT resident. These are the first two of a five-part series about an imaginary place called "Oobieland." Reminds me a bit of Jeff Keen.

La ronde des métiers

Been listening to this French children's record lately. It's meant to teach kids about skilled trades from days of yore. Totally beautiful sparkly little folk tunes for medieval career planning. There's another one in this series that's all about animals. The music feels very Wes Anderson to me, or at least reminds me of some of the music in Moonrise Kingdom. Check it out.

Here is Always Somewhere Else

Just a heads up about this awesome mix made by Molly over at Pattern & Shape. A summer psych/beat sesh with ethno excursions. Totally insane. I got to hear some of these jams driving around Portland with Molly when I visited a few months ago. Had to stifle the impulse to ask what every single song was. This and loads of other great mixes can be found on Molly's soundcloud.

Also, if you missed my visit to Jonny Trunk's OST show a few weeks ago, an mp3 is now archived here. Thanks again to Jonny and Resonance for a very fun time.
